After North Korea's invasion of South Korea in 1950, all government offices, churches, and houses were turned to ashes. In 1976, Jeongju-eup installed the East, West, and South branches, and in 1981, Jeongju-eup was promoted to city status and separated from Jeongeup-gun.
In 1983, parts of Naejang-myeon, Soseong-myeon, Deokcheon-myeon, and Bukmyeon were annexed to Jeongju City. A rearrangement of eup and myeon administrative regions took place in 1987. In 1989, Sinjeong-ri of Ibam-myeon became a part of Jeongju, while Janghak-ri of Jeongwu-myeon was annexed to Buk-myeon.
On 1st January 1995, by the amalgamation of city and gun (12 dongs of Jeongju City and 15 eups and myeons of Jeongeup-gun), the area became known as Jeongeup City.
